Gov. Cuomo responds to controversy over overtime-paying Brooklyn correction officers

Republican Gov. Rob Astorino was enraged Thursday by reports that current Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office charged his Albany County Sheriff’s office more than $30,000 prior to informing his office about ongoing investigations by the federal Department of Justice and New York State Attorney General, “and then returned the money after it was raised by taxpayer dollars from the Sheriff’s fund in an effort to defeat [his] re-election efforts.”

“I am 100% opposed to Andrew Cuomo for Governor,” Astorino wrote on Twitter Thursday evening. “The governor had a ‘Burglary’ squad in county jails for months, that’s illegal. By calling it a security violation was like saying my house is not safe because there is mold in it. Both are lies and he failed. The taxpayers are fed up with his incompetence.”

The sheriff’s account — and former Gov. Cuomo’s response to the accusations — are both here:

Earlier today, I had the opportunity to speak with Governor Cuomo about this story. It is a complete lie. We talked with them in person. I am a law abiding officer of the state of New York. If I had done anything wrong, I would have been here in Albany.

Since the day after I became sheriff, we have worked collaboratively with the Attorney General’s office and other federal agencies and received countless favorable rulings from the courts, not just in our office but in a range of Albany based agencies like the state Attorney General’s office, the state Banking Commissioner’s office, and others. If these types of actions had not followed by the federal government, I would have been charged with criminal conduct.

The people I represent are sick and tired of this blatant disrespect for the taxpayers of our county. They would rather have the AG prosecute cases than any other state agencies. For years, his office has used resources of county taxpayers and did nothing with them. He has told people I can’t work in county jails, his people tried to steal my guns, he slapped me with a ‘political’ misdemeanor, and today I was called by his office and I have to run from it.

Nothing has been done in all this time to change the mind of the AG’s office and make sure he does not bully and blackmail the sheriffs that he claims he fights for. These are the officers that protect our state and they are treating them as criminals. He has created enemies for the many years he has been in office and he will continue to do the same here.

I am 100% opposed to Andrew Cuomo for Governor. The governor had a ‘Burglary’ squad in county jails for months, that’s illegal. By calling it a security violation was like saying my house is not safe because there is mold in it. Both are lies and he failed. The taxpayers are fed up with his incompetence. This is nothing more than a political fight.
